Asanee Wool Mat – Tradition You Can Sit On
Handwoven in the scenic district of Samtse, Bhutan, Asanee is more than just a mat—it's a story woven in wool. Crafted by the skilled Ghalley & Gurung community, each mat is made from 100% natural, undyed sheep wool in shades of soft white and deep black, depending on seasonal availability.
The name Asanee finds its roots in the Southern Bhutanese Nepali dialect—Asaan, Garaan, Garnus—a respectful invitation meaning "please sit." Here, Asaan means sit, and nee refers to the mat, making Asanee quite literally a "sitting mat" with cultural warmth built into its name.
True to its heritage, the wool is woven on traditional back-strap looms, preserving age-old craftsmanship and supporting local shepherding families. Patterns emerge based on wool availability, most often featuring a clean white base contrasted by bold black checks—a striking yet simple aesthetic perfect for modern, nature-inspired interiors. Some designs favor larger white areas, shaped by customer demand and material at hand.
Asanee mats are versatile and stylish—used as sitting mats, cushion covers for diwans and sofas, or even minimalist floor pieces. These mats don’t just furnish a space—they tell a story, honor a tradition, and bring natural elegance into your home.
